Paña in Quichua means piranha, yacu means river (or water) and cocha means lake.

The Pañacocha reserve is a 59,000 hectare reserve created by the Ministerio de Ambiente (Environmental Ministry) and RIVER DOLPHIN EXPEDITIONS purchased a track of land in the reserve that was for sale since it already had title before the reserve declaration.

This is a rustic tourism lodge where the tourist may hike on their own, paddle the various lagoons or simply watch birds. Hiking, swimming, fishing, motorboat and paddling are all a part of this tour. We cater to special interests such as birdwatching, useful plant studies, trekking, padding excursions, general flora and fauna observations and camping in the forest if the didn’t wishes. We also offer classes for students who wish to have both in-class and in-field courses related to Amazonian ecology.

Here is a general outline of our activities during the next days.

Suggested itinerary

Day 1: Coca-Pañacocha (approximately 6 hours by motor boat). We have lunch on the shores of the Napo River. There are over 470 species of fish in this region. We will arrive at the lodge in the late afternoon. In the evening, we have a Pañacocha introductory session, explaining the history of the area, the flora and fauna, the importance of the region and the work of the RIVER DOLPHIN GROUP.

Day 2: Morning: We hike with special emphasis on medicinal and other useful plants, birdwatching and general fauna observations. Afternoon: We paddle canoe around the 2 lagoons and swim in the lake. Dugouts in Ecuador are commonly referred as "canoes".

Day 3: Today we travel upriver by motorboat observing the flora and fauna of the reserve. We hike. Have lunch then return by paddling downstream (approximately 4 hour paddle and 2 or 3 hour walk). We arrive at the lodge at sunset

Day 4: Morning: Today we will test your fishing skills. Randy Smith (one of the tour leaders) is writing a new book "Common Fish of the Ecuadorian Amazon". You  help him in his research and hopefully have some good eating too. We will paddle and explore the Pijuali Cocha or the beauty of this lagoon is a perfect setting to watch the sunset. If water levels and fish migrations permit, we also will be observing dolphins during the tour.

Day 5: Today (weather permitting), we will hike from the lagoon to the Napo River where the motorboat will pick us up. We will have lunch with a Quichua family, then travel upstream to Coca for our return trip.

Important: If there are 1, 2 or 3 passengers the departures will be on  Monday return Thursday, Thursday return sunday, Fridays and return on Tuesdays. For organized groups the departure will be any day, and private transport will be any day.
